Digital Triptych
- Triptych is an art that made up of three different panels/paintings/photographs that are intended to be displayed together. The three panels become one unified piece of work to the viewer.
- The triptych format creates a visual impact above that of single-panel artwork. Multiple panels create a sense of depth, dimensionality, and complexity, which can be particularly effective for larger and more detailed nature images.
2. INSTRUCTIONS
TASK 3 : DIGITAL TRIPTYCH - 20%
The objective of this assignment is to apply Scott McCloud's theory on transitions to create a digital triptych, comprising three panels: one before, one during (climactic turning point), and one after a significant event. Each panel will represent a different transition type from McCloud's theory.
Referencing Scott McCloud's analysis of transitions in "Understanding Comics," you will select one panel before and one panel after the climactic turning point, surrounding a panel representing the turning point itself. Each panel will exemplify a different transition type, creating a digital triptych that showcases various narrative transitions.
- Review Scott McCloud's transitions: moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject, scene-to-scene, aspect-to-aspect.
- Select one transition type for each of the three panels: before, during (climactic turning point), and after the turning point.
- Identify specific moments or elements in the narrative that align with the chosen transitions.
- Create a digital triptych with three panels that clearly illustrate the chosen transitions.
- Use any digital medium (illustration software, graphic design tools, etc.) to craft the panels.
- Ensure coherence and narrative flow between the panels, capturing the essence of the transitions selected.
- Submit the completed digital triptych via the designated platform.
- Include a brief explanation for each panel, detailing the chosen transition and its significance in the narrative context.
- Ensure that each panel distinctly represents its respective transition type.
Assesment Criteria :
- Understanding and application of Scott McCloud's theory on transitions in creating the digital triptych.
- Clarity and effectiveness in using each transition to depict the sequential narrative.
- Coherence and visual storytelling across the three panels.
- Artistic execution and presentation of the digital triptych.
DEADLINE : End of WEEK 11
3.1 Briefing (WEEK 10)
Mr Hafiz briefed us in a meeting. He gave an example of creating transitions using 3-acts structure, law of closure, transition type on history, or in comic (refer to task 2). More transitions example can view in here.
He told us to create 3 panels of transitions that conclude before climax, during, and after climax. For the story, we would choose for using our previous urban legend (decisive moment) or create a new one. Start creating the sketches and showed it to Mr Hafiz in consultation session.
3.2 Ideation and Sketches (WEEK 10)
On this task, I'm gonna used the previous urban legend that i created. Before exploring of the panels, I would like to showed the decisive moment task as a foundation to create the transitions.

At first, i had a simple idea on my mind, here is the idea recap :
- Panel 1 : She started enter the room (draw a door and she behind it)
- Panel 2 : Using previous task (darker animation part)
- Panel 3 : She got shocked when realized something strange ( draw shock element)
* Panel 2 Climax Part :

I don't create sketches on this trial because i just tested if this approved or not.

After I showed this to Mr Hafiz, He said that i need more detailed movement by changing an angle or the composition. to do so, Firstly i need to created the sketches. Below are example by Mr Hafiz that i should developed it.

Short Explanation About the Panel :
- Panel 1 (BEFORE) = In okiku day, she is praying (angle shot from right)
- Panel 2 (DURING) = Climax part, Light flickering and scream sound
- Panel 3 (AFTER) = She realized something strange happened
3.3 Digitisation (WEEK 11)
- Tracing the Sketches :

* Note : lock the images first then create new layer and use pen/pencil tool to trace it.
- Coloring Progress :
I used eyedropper tool to made it fast by copy and paste the color in previous task.

- Font :
Same with the previous task, I use the same font type which is "chalkduster" for the calender and the last panel text.
These font had a spooky vibes that matches the horror situation that happened in my urban legend.

3.4 Undertanding and Explanation (WEEK 11)
1. Apllication of Scott McLoud's Theory
Among six type of Mc Cloud's Transition, My transitions of all the panels were action-to-action. There's an action happening in every panels :
- PANEL 1 : She started entered the room on Okiku day then starts the praying.
- PANEL 2 : She realized that something happened when the prayer is being implemented
- PANEL 3 : After the prayer, she felt that something strange happened. This must be the consequences because in action there's a reason and consequences. (Ex : People drinking until drunk).
As a result, the story keep moving because it had an action does on the prayer, so the story continues.
2. Identify Spesific Moment in chosen Transition
Why choosing those scene for transition? and What Relatives?
I didn’t took the main part where okiku hair should growing because in my urban legend, it shows that someone praying so i search some idea to develop it. here it is :
- Prays in okiku day, because strange things happened in okiku day based on the story. I described it in the calender (panel 1)
- Start Entering the room, i use different angle to showed this based on Mr Hafiz suggestion.
- Light flicker, scream sound, it is some example of strange things happened that matches the narrative i used for transition when she is praying.
- Okiku Smile, the story said that the child soul is trapped inside the doll. To describe the child soul, I made the doll smile as a sign that the child is happy when someone come and praying or faking a smile because she is sad and didn’t want to accept her fate to die.
3.5 Visual Storytelling
I create the story based on every panels, here it is :
| |
| Fig 3.5.1 Storytelling Every Panels Week 11 08/12/2023 |
It’s Okiku Day! (Could be birthday or death day), where there would be person do prayed as a form of memory for the little girl (Okiku) that already died. She entered the room and kneel down for praying. Suddenly, the light started turned off and some weird scream happens.
The room had become dark and the light is flickering. There’s only a tiny light that iluminate the okiku doll. Okiku is smiling as it is living. She tried to focusing on her pray, ignoring all the strange things happened around her.
This is the climax shot where all the unusual things began to develop---
She felt that something must be happened when she prayed. She freeze and try to memorize what just happened before.
Did you feel something strange... or is it just halucination?

5. FEEDBACK
Week 11
The first trial of my transitions is lack of the moment. He said that each panel look confusing and didn't united to creating a story. To fixed that, I could try to make a different angle and POV. it could be from side, corner, etc.
6. REFLECTIONS
Experience
Creating a digital triptych of the Okiku doll was a fascinating journey that allowed me to delve into the intersection of traditional Japanese folklore, modern technology, and visual storytelling. The digital medium allowed me the flexibility to experiment with different styles and techniques, enhancing the overall visual impact of the triptych.
Observation
When looking on others work and the suggestion by Mr Hafiz, I observed that i need to do revision quickly because it almost the deadline of this task. From this, i learned that we need to pay attention around us and look for the sample given. We need to create new panels, not using the frame that we made in GIF.
Findings
Through this illustrative journey, I found that the Okiku doll served as a captivating bridge between the tangible and the intangible, the historical and the contemporary. The triptych not only visually narrated the haunting tale but also prompted reflection on the enduring power of folklore to captivate and transcend cultural boundaries, even in the realm of digital art.
