PROGRAM GUIDE :
EXERCISES 1
(Quantify & Visualize Data) - 10%
We need to find an object like Lego, button, coin that could be quantified. Next, quantify (count) our chosen items and arrange the objects into a presentable layout or chart. Take a picture and submit!

This exercises, I'm gonna use Lego as an object. I collected them on the jar first.

Fig 1.2 Arrangement Idea Week 1 08/02/2024
I got this arrangement idea when i had assignment to create a mind map during high school. I tried on it and the result is not bad. Below are the references used.
Fig 1.3 References for Arrangement Week 1 08/02/2024
I arranged it based on their studs in 9 categories ( - studs, 1 stud, 2 studs, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 32 studs). On A3 Paper, I drawed a frame and the title with logo shape.
Fig 1.4 Progress (BTS) Week 1 08/02/2024
Fig 1.5 1st Draft Week 1 09/02/2024
I realized that i should count the color for every studs. Therefore i arranged again for the position to made every color is sequentially.

EXERCISES 2
( L.A.T.C.H ) - 10%
Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy
We need to organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles.

Requirement :
- Include LATCH principles (min. 4)
- Can re-use back the images but do create the rest of our own visuals to complete the poster.
- Size resolution: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

We were given 3 recommendation topic which is Pokedex, Bestiary, and Dinosaur. I found that the topic is had a complicated information so i tried to find another topic which is African Wildcat.

1.RESEARCH
Intro : African wildcats were first domesticated about 10,000 years ago in the Near East, and are the ancestors of the domestic cat (F. catus ). Crossings between a domestic cat and an African wildcat are still common today.

African Wildcat is the size of a large housecat. They have longer legs than the domestic cat, giving them a more upright posture in the sitting position and a different walking form. The African wildcat has a very broad habitat tolerance and is found from deserts, semi deserts, savannahs, scrub grassland to open forests in hilly and rocky terrain as well as in mixed forests.

Based on what i searched, there are 10 type of African Wildcat.
Fig 2.1 Type of African Wildcat Week 2 15/02/2024
I classified them based on their longevity (maximize age), extinction and their habitat in part of African.

I got the resources based on IUCN (International Union for Conversation of Nature) database 2021 on this link : List of Ten African Wildcat.
From the resources, I arranged the data using the LATCH method :
Fig 2.2 Data Sorted Week 02 16/02/2024
I'm not sure if the "T" of the Latch Principles so I decided to not count it in the chosen LATCH principles.

Chosen L.A.T.C.H Principles
L : African
A : Wildcat Habitat based on Alphabet orders (Central, East, Middle, North, South, West)
C : Extinction Rate (High Risk : Vulnerable, Low Risk : Least Concern)
H : Their longevity based on Youngest to Oldest age.

2. MOODBOARD
Mr Shamsul suggest me to create a visual like an african continent then put the wildcat on top of it like Fig 1.7 . I followed up the suggestion and find the similar infographics as my references.
Fig 2.3 Moodboard References Week 2 16/02/2024
Those are the references and the main color i'm gonna use is blue, green and yellow. For the cat, there were only least illustration of it, so i decided to draw the cat by mw own style.

3. SKETCHES
Below are the sketches i drew on IbisPaintX :
Fig 2.4 Sketches #1 Week 2 16/02/2024
Sketch #1 was first inspired me when i looked at their longevity. I want to create like a ladder from youngest to oldest. Despite that, I'm not sure if all the information could fit in that sketches, so i drew another one after received feedback.

Fig 2.5 Sketches #2 Week 2 16/02/2024
I looked again for my references and got an idea on it. Sketches #2 was inspired on it. I want to classified the wildcat based on their longevity from top to bottom. Moreover, I'm gonna add some tree, mountain, grass and stone to illustrate their living live which is the forest. An African continent was drawn to show that they are mostly found in African. I create a line to connect all them like candy crush level style.
Fig 2.6 Candy Crush Game Week 2 17/02/2024
After choosing which sketches I go to, I tend to the Sketches #2. Next, I sketches the cats using this pose :

Done with the sketches, below are the final sktetches i made (All of them were created using Ibis Paint).

4. DIGITISATION
- WildCats
I colored the cat first using brush. I tend to use vibrant color like orange, yellow, and brown on it.
Fig 2.12 Behind the Scene of Coloring the Cats Week 2 18/02/2024
Under the cats name, there's a size name to know if the cat is big, average or small when put it all in the poster.

Final Cats :

- Infographic
Moving to the infographics, Create a canvas with the size 1240 x 1750 px. Then do the continent first. Inspired by the moodboard, I used light green and blue as the main color because it match together. Green as mainland and blue as the sea.
Fig 2.14 Coloring the Main Part as the First Step Week 02 18/02/2024
I do the rest by adding the cats, decorate it with wind, mountain, trees, line, etc until it looks like a forest already. I enjoyed the progress and had minimize the problem happened during digitisation.
Fig 2.15 More Progress (Adding cats - Decor the top - To the bottom) Week 02 18/02/2024
I added some rectangle and lower the opacity so it does not cover the background on it. Actually, I want to made a notes on the left bottom but it did not had much places to fit, resulting on the right top of it.
Fig 2.16 Adding Rectangles for Information Week 02 18/02/2024
Last step, i moved to canva to add the text on it.
Font Used :
- Title : Genty Sans

1st Trial :

On week 3, Mr Shamsul gave me feedback about the square design for cat information. He told me to make it all same style like the right top (notes). I accepted his feedback and started revision on my poster.

Fig 2.22 Final Outcome Exercises 2 (PNG) Week 03 21/02/2024
Chosen L.A.T.C.H Principles
L : African
A : Wildcat Habitat based on Alphabet orders (Central, East, Middle, North, South, West)
C : Extinction Rate (High Risk : Vulnerable, Low Risk : Least Concern)
H : Their longevity based on Youngest to Oldest age.
FEEDBACK
Week 1 - Exercises 01
Absent with Permission.

Week 2 - Exercises 02
General Feedback : When creating the infographics, Do not only focus the visual/aesthetic on it but the data must be clear first. Remember to have the LATCH point minimum 4 on the infographics.
Specific Feedback : Do more research for the data. One data is not enough. It can be the size, specifications, etc. For the visual, Lectures gave an example to create it like an African map and the species on top of it.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
On both exercises , i gained practical experience on data analysis (when quantify the object), visual representation (learning how to translate data into visually appealing and informative graphics), Storytelling (structuring information to tell a coherent and engaging story, whether about Lego or African wildcats and Lastly the Design principles. For example Applying principles of design, such as balance, contrast, alignment, and proximity, to create visually harmonious and effective communication infographics.

Observation
The exercises provided a dynamic platform for exploring the intersection of data, design, and storytelling. From quantifying LEGO data to crafting infographics using the LATCH method, we honed our skills in translating complex information into compelling visual narratives like arranging the Lego /pcs to find the similar one and do research from one sources to another until recap it on 1 table.

Findings
Information design is the combination between information and design. It is not only provided a visual but does the information. Balancing those 2 aspects could create a visual information to gain a new knowledge on it. The design should be attractive and the information had to be clear and easy to understand.
